How bad is the housing shortage?

As extensively documented in the 2019 Westchester County Housing Needs Assessment, we need between 11,000 and 18,000 new homes just to meet present day demand.

Over the past few years, the age cohort between 30-44 has been the fastest shrinking demographic, often because there are inadequate housing options affordable to young families. Those 85 and older are the fastest growing demographic – and they have completely different housing needs! Nearly as many people commute into Westchester from elsewhere – often from quite a distance — as those who commute from Westchester into the city each day.

There is no city, town, or village in all of Westchester where the market rate rent for a 2-BR apartment is affordable to those earning the local hourly renter wage. This is truly an “all hands-on deck” moment.
