The proposed 2023 Capital Budget has been released by County Executive George Latimer on October 13, 2022.
The Welcome Home Westchester campaign believes that this budget proposal – which includes $90 million in affordable housing incentives — will be an excellent step towards addressing the housing crisis in Westchester County.
Below is a statement on the proposal from Tim Foley, CEO & Executive Vice President of the BRI:
“On behalf of the Welcome Home Westchester campaign, we salute County Executive Latimer and his team for once again making affordable housing a top priority in the 2023 Proposed Capital budget.
The $90 million assigned for affordable housing incentives, specifically for land and infrastructure development to support the construction of housing, will tremendously aid those already living in our cities, towns, and villages, to say nothing of directly promoting opportunities for future residents who will continue the endless cycle of revitalizing the neighborhoods we love. The County’s commitment in the proposed budget includes $50 million Westchester received from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), helping to address the ways the pandemic, subsequent inflation, and current surge in interest rates have made our local housing market even more unaffordable than ever before.
These are truly investments that will not only help fill our current housing shortage, but which will lay the groundwork for future prosperity. We know that building the housing we need is one of the most economy-boosting investments a city, town, or village can make, and delivers tremendous economic benefits for existing and future residents. We’re glad the County so clearly sees the wisdom of making these investments.”
